Motion for the 2026 ETFO Annual Meeting

An update regarding the motion for the 2026 ETFO Annual Meeting:

At the ETFO-Toronto Occasional Teachers Local Winter General Meeting, on February 25, 2026, the following motion was read into the record, debated, and passed. It has since been submitted to and received by ETFO Provincial.

THAT ETFO launch, in consultation with Occasional Teacher local leaders, a digital PA/PR campaign on the staffing crisis in our schools: unfilled vacancies, loss of preparation time, and the persistent use of unqualified persons who stand in for education workers. This would include a discussion of the underlying reasons, the impact this is having on providing a quality public education system, key demands to address this issue, and an internal educational campaign on the role and importance of certified occasional teachers.

Rationale: School boards are using unqualified individuals as a cost-saving measure and sacrificing students’ education – the public needs to know about it and fight against this undermining of the role of the Occasional Teacher.
